Vaiswanara Choornam is an Ayurvedic product which is available in herbal powder form and finds a reference in Chakradatta Amavachikitsa 15-18, Sahasrayoga and Astangahridayam. Vaiswanara in Sanskrit means fire. Since the choornam is effective in correcting the digestive fire (system) hence, the name Vaiswanara Choornam. It is a very effective product for correcting digestive ailments and constipation and is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is made up of rock salt and four types of herbal powder – 20 gms Manimantha (Saindhava lavana / rock salt), 20 gms Yamani (Trachyspermum ammi), 30 gms Ajamoda (Trachyspermum roxburghianum), 50 gms Nagara (Zingiber Officinalis / ginger) and 120 gms Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Vaiswanara Choornam is an effective remedy especially to treat digestive problems including loss of appetite, constipation, bloating, flatulence and abdominal pain and helps to improve digestion, immunity, and strength. It is an excellent product for good bowel movements. The choornam is also recommended for treating rheumatoid arthritis and piles. Vaiswanara Choornam calms Vata and Pitta. The Ayurvedic properties of Vaiswanara Choornam include Roga karma (gulma, amavata, bastiroga, hridroga, shula, anaha, pliha, katigraha, vibanda, udara rogas, pada rogas and hastha rogas), Dosha karma (tridoshahara), Agni karma (deepana) and other karma (malanulomaka, vatanulomaka, shulahara, ruchya, lekhana and srotoshodana). One to three grams of Vaiswanara Choornam should be taken once or twice a day, either before food or after food. Traditionally, this is taken with a supernatent watery portion of curd, buttermilk, ghee, fermented gruel or hot water. Rheumatoid patients should take the choornam with either buttermilk or hot water. For improvement of digestion, Vaiswanara Choornam should be accompanied with fermented gruel or the watery portion of curd and buttermilk. Those with sensitive stomachs should take the powder with ghee which will help in improving digestion. Vaiswanara Choornam should be taken only after medical consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor. An overdose of this product may lead to diarrhea and people with hypertension are recommended not to take the product without medical supervision as it contains salt. The shelf-life of Vaiswanara Choornam is two years from its date of manufacture.
