General Debility

General debility or “Durbalya” means the lack of strength in a person. In Ayurveda, strength is known as “Balam”. Balam can be loosely described as “power of resistance.” The sage Charaka has used the terms “Vyadhi” and “Avyadhi kshamatwa” in this reference. Those who are capable of resisting diseases are called “Vyadhi Kshamatwa.” Those who cannot fight against diseases and are easily affected by them are called “Vayadhi Akham,” which is the sure sign of general debility or general weakness lack of strength.

Broadly, debility is also known by other names: infirmity, frailty, feebleness and frailness.

Symptoms of Debility and Fatigue

Weakness is a very common symptom. The feeling of weakness may be subjective (the person feels weak but has no measurable loss of strength) or concrete measurable loss of strength). Weakness may be generalized (total body weakness) or localized to a specific area, side the body, limb and so on.
Weakness is particularly important when it occurs in only one area of the body.

Home Remedies for General Debility

  • Massage is a great way to energize the body so include a self-massage or abhyanga on a regular basis. Using classic Ayurvedic oils like Mahanarayana Taila or Chandan Bala Lakshadi Taila for massage.
  • Drink goat’s milk as far as possible.
  • Jackfruit or Phanasa is a fruit that acts as a powerful rejuvenator and strengthener. The ripened fruit is sweet, pulpy and unctuous. It should be had in a dosage of 1-10 gms a day for general debility cure. Similarly, mangoes, bananas, grapes, sweet limes and sapodillas (chickoo) are beneficial fruits for this condition.
  • Add a teaspoon of ghee to a glass of milk. Add a little bit of ginger powder, warm it lightly and drink regularly.

General Debility Treatment

Herbs
  • Amlaki (Emblica Officinalis): Amla is full of antioxidants that can slow down aging and act as a rejuvenative tonic. Take dried and powdered Amla fruits with equal quantities of dried dates, seedless raisins and jaggery. Roll this mixture into small pills of 3-5 gms each. Take one pill daily. Amla murabba or amla juice can also be consumed regularly.
  • Shatavari (Asparagus Racemosus): Mix 2 parts of shatavari powder with one part of cardamom (elaichi) and a few strands of saffron. Take this with milk or water once daily.
  • Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera): The Ayurvedic name for Ashwagandha is “Balya” meaning strength. As its name confirms, it is used for stamina and energy. Take a teaspoon of ashwagandha powder with one tablespoon of honey in lukewarm milk at bedtime.
  • Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula): After amla, this is another component of the classic Ayurvedic formulation: triphala. Use with ashwagandha and ghee for strength and endurance for treatment of general debility and emaciation.
  • Safed Musli (Chlorophytum Borivilianum): Boil half to one teaspoon of musli and gokhru in milk. Consume daily to build ojas.
  • Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum): Take one glass of warm milk and add one fourth teaspoon of cardamom to it. Flavor the milk with a pinch of nutmeg. This drink makes a comforting nightcap for people in a debilitated situation or depressed state of mind.

Diet In principal of good nutrition: Eat sensibly, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. This type of diet should be high in the following immune strengthening nutrients: beta carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B6, folic acid, zinc and selenium.
  • Drink more water.
  • Eat less fat. You will certainly get all the energy and nutrients you need from fat if you include a certain amount of milk, cheese and egg in your diet.
  • Eat less animal protein.
  • Eat more fiber-rich carbohydrates. Avoid bread, cake, puddings, etc.
  • Eat more fruits, vegetables and grains.
  • Use less salt and sugar in your diet.
  • If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
  • Modern appliances that we use for convenience like refrigerators, microwave ovens and cookers are also harmful to health. Pre-cut and polythene-covered vegetables, frozen foods and pre-cooked foods are equally unsafe for those who suffer from General Debility because these foodstuffs contain additives to increase shelf-life but reduce their prana or vital energy.
Lifestyle 
  • Get into the habit of exercising regularly. Exercising boosts circulation, stimulates the production of “feel good” hormones and regulates waste (toxin) removal.
  • Avoid habits that can compromise your immune system, such as cigarette smoking, excessive alcoholic intake, drug use and multiple sexual partners without appropriate protection.
  • Keep your chin up: Try to maintain emotional stability and a positive outlook.
  • It’s very important to get a good night’s sleep as this is one of the best ways to feel refreshed and keep fatigue at bay.
  • Eliminate screens – all light and sound distractions that keep the mind active.
  • Eat at least 3 hours before bedtime. This way, food will get digested and the body will prepare for rest.
  • Avoid watching TV or working in bed. Make sure to use your bed exclusively for sleeping.
