Beat the Heat and Seasonal Heat Rashes

With the seasonal change, and summer fast approaching and soon to be gone comes the various allergies and reactions that are common to us all. Here, skin care can be crucial to keep your skin feeling smooth and flawless. If you are a Pitta dosha type chances are that your body is reacting badly to the oncoming heat and breaking out in rashes and bumps.

Prevention is better than cure as they say. Ayurveda and heat management suggests that your Pitta dosha is overactive in the season of summer. Here is what you should do to prevent a heat rash from occurring in the first place.

  • The first thing you want to do is to watch your clothing. Avoid wearing too many layers, and think of softer fabrics like cotton and linen.
  • Additionally, do not wear clothing that is too tight or restrictive. The tight clothing may rub against your skin and cause an irritation or allergic reaction.
  • If the area is too hot, look for shade or stay indoors in a climate controlled environment.
  • Make sure that when you sleep it is cool and well-ventilated.
  • Stay hydrated to avoid heat stroke.

Home Remedy for Heat Rash

  • The first thing you want to do is incorporate all the preventive measures mentioned above.
  • Secondly, try bathing in cool waters with a non-drying soap. Do not roughly dry your skin instead try to let your skin naturally air dry. The friction from rubbing your skin dry or even dabbing it dry can add to skin irritation.
  • Use cooling lotions like aloe vera or calamine lotion on the rash area itself. Aloe vera is also anti-inflammatory which cools itchy irritated skin.
  • Do not use petroleum-based jellies or lotions which can clog the pores of the skin.

As mentioned above, any sort of rash developed during the summer is in correspondence to an imbalance of the Pitta dosha. In Ayurveda, it is believed that the increased fire in the Pitta dosha causes the body to sweat more. This excessive sweating can cause prickly heat-like symptoms.
