Just like humans, cats and dogs too have a mind-body type constitution. The three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, are a combination of five elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
Vata Pets: Some of the characteristics of pets who are predominantly of Vata constitution are:
- Mental agility
- Lean body types
- Tendency to walk briskly
- Discomfort in cold climates
- Low attention span and quickly changing moods
Pitta pets: Some of the main characteristics you will find in pets with a predominant Pitta constitution are:
- Strong, well-built physique
- Assertiveness, aggression, tendency of being the alpha
- Strong appetite and digestion
- Sluggishness in hot climates
- Tendency to physical problems like rashes, ulcers and boils

Understanding Dosha Imbalances in Your Pet
Take a look at some of the most common symptoms of each dosha's imbalance.
Vata dosha imbalance is characterized by being too light or airy and dry. Your pet may express symptoms of anxiety, fear or even hyperactivity with a Vata imbalance.
Pitta dosha is characterized by excessive heat and moisture. Your pet may express symptoms of aggression and inflammation.
Kapha dosha is characterized by sluggishness, weight gain and over-protectiveness. You pet could display symptoms of withdrawal, obesity and territorial behavior with a Kapha imbalance.
Balancing the Unbalanced
If you feel that your furry friend may be experiencing an imbalanced dosha, try these tips.
Vata dosha: Try giving your pet a nice warm massage. Stick to moist foods and environments. Try to adhere to a fixed routine.
Pitta dosha: Try to encourage consumption of cooling foods and environments. Try taking your pet swimming to cool off. Encourage stimulating, non-aggressive games like playing with a ball.
Kapha dosha: Stick with light energy foods for your pet. Avoid moist or heavy foods. Design your pet's very own safe space, like a bed or sand pit.
