My Journey into the Ayurveda Life

In Sanskrit Ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,”….According to chopra.com.

As I'm reading this, a "the-hell!" sign goes off in my brain. Who smelt horses and came back to name a herb after it? The fact that Ashwagandha helps work on potency and energy level makes the whole situation more shady (and funny?). I snigger and get back to work.

It's the best part of my day, really. Finding out information about things that exist in nature and how they can help us. Somehow, we've learnt to ignore them because we dote on our fast-acting products, making natural living redundant. It was only when I started my Ayurveda journey did I realize how important it is to look for more holistic options for solving everyday health and lifestyle issues rather than filling your body with chemicals.

It would be fair to say that I'm still a W.I.P. (Work in Progress) piece but I'm more aware now and can make better life choices. Before I launch into a full-blown rant about my generation and our hedonistic tendencies, let me tell you about the natural things I do daily to stay in my best form. If you too live away from home, here are few tips to take home with you!

A pinch of this

Since we started with stinky horse herb..uh-oh..I mean Ashwagandha, let me tell you more about it. Being in the field of Ayurveda, there's a lot of information to assimilate, digest and retain. Ashwagandha is traditionally used for so many Ayurvedic products ranging from Mental Health to General Health. My daily dose of Ashwagandha capsules helps me retain things and stay focused. Also, I've realized that it helps me stay cheerful.

Happy chemical locha

Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin and Endorphins are the guys who affect your state of happiness. All of them have their roles to play and excess of either gives results that are less than desirable. Before starting any journey of being happy naturally, it is important that you start off each day telling yourself that you choose to make it a joyful one. Since I don't stay at home, being in a new city can bring you down but I've found comfort in a certain routine and I always try to start my day with things that are tried and true. For example, it's small things such as smelling coffee, seeing a clean kitchen and watching birds from my window early in the morning that have a positive effect on me.

Once in a while I like to switch to Khadi's Khus Soap because it reminds me of my childhood in Nagpur where we used coolers for summer and used Khus perfumes. It INSTANTLY lifts up my mood.

Chai-vinistic pleasures

Although I'm more of a coffee person and it helps balance my Kapha (that's my Ayurvedic dosha, find yours too) out, during the summers, I cut down on it or else I get dehydrated and get unsightly pimples. Can't have that, no siree! So, I switch to Ayurvedic Teas, which aren't teas at all. They're just water boiled with a bunch of herbs that you can sip on and relax. Shoutout to my college mate who introduced me to the concept of infused teas and kadhas. I'm forever grateful. If you're interested, here's one that I like drinking regularly.

Take:

  • 1 tablespoon fennel
  • 2-3 pods of cardamom
  • 2 tablespoon of food-grade rose water

Take fennel and cardamom and boil it with one glass of water. Make sure the vessel is covered or else the volatile oils will escape, making your brew useless. Set it aside and let it cool down for 15 minutes. Refrigerate according to preference. Add food-grade rosewater just before drinking.

It takes getting used to but now I absolutely love this refreshing Pitta pacifying drink. Pitta is the name of another dosha but that's for another time.

War zone at work

Being competitive has its perks. Every day, my colleague who shares my desk with me and I have a water drinking competition. I used to feel so full after 2 liters of water throughout the day but all thanks to her, I'm up to 4 liters per day now! The game aspect of it always keeps me on my toes and inculcates a good habit. Also, the ladies restroom at our office is always full #JustSaying.

Bonus tip:

Anyone who knows me, knows that I don't use Rose Water, I take a BATH in it! Cleopatra would feel ashamed if she were to find out the amount I use daily. Around 3 PM every day, I head over to wash my face and spray some rose water on it and that really helps me feel cool, fresh and I kinda dig the smell. That's my natural beauty fix.

Whenever I get the time, I head over to meet abandoned fur babies at an animal shelter by the name of Animals Matter to Me. I don't get to go there often but whenever I do, the commute is always worth it. Puppy love is what this life is all about. Here's me having a tender moment with one of 'em puppers:
