Look Sharp! 4 Simple Yogic Eye Exercises for Good Vision

When it comes to taking good care of our bodies, we have a diet plan and exercise regime in place. However, our eyes are one of the most easily ignored organs of our body, despite the work they do for us. The number of hours spent on a daily basis watching TV and working on the computer take a massive toll on eye health.

The holistic system of Ayurveda believes that eyes are one of the most important organs of the body. Proper eye care is paramount in preserving one’s vision. In today’s day and age with electronic screens everywhere, it’s even more crucial to take care for the eyes.

Ayurveda recommends a preventative approach to health problems, so there are several things that one can do to prevent eye disease and improve one’s vision.

Yoga Eye Exercises to Improve Eyesight

There are plenty of eye yoga exercises that you can do to keep your eyes healthy; after all, we have yoga for the body, so why not yoga for the eyes? Practicing yoga for healthy eyes will prevent as well as treat any vision issues.

These vision yoga exercises will improve your vision, make your optical muscles stronger, as well as prevent typical signs of aging such as wrinkles, saggy skin and puffiness.

1.Palming (Eye Warm Up):

a. Sit in a comfortable position, either on the floor or in a chair.
b. Rub both the palms vigorously, until you can feel heat beginning to radiate from them.
c. Place the palms over the eyes, and feel the warmth coming from them and spreading to the eyes.

2. Up & Down Eye Rotations:

  1. Sit on the floor with your legs stretched out, while keeping the head, body and spine straight. Close your right fist and let it rest on the right knee, with your thumb facing the ceiling.

  2. Fix the gaze on an object in front of you, keeping your head still.

  3. Exhale deeply and turn your gaze upwards.

  4. Make sure that only the eyeballs are moving while the head remains unmoved.

  5. Inhale deeply and bring your gaze back to the object.

  6. Repeat the same process with the left thumb.

3. Sideway Eye Rotation:

  1. Sit in on the floor or yoga mat in the Padmasana or Sukhasana position, while keeping the head and spine erect.

  2. Keep the arms outstretched, with your fists clasped and thumbs facing the ceiling. Focus your gaze on the thumb.

  3. Bring the hands close to the face, spaced between the eyebrows.

  4. Slowly move your hand to the right with your eyes following the path of movement. Ensure that your head is remaining straight and only the eyes are moving.

  5. Bring the hand back to the space between your eyebrows.

  6. Repeat this with the left side.

  7. Inhale deeply while keeping the hands placed in between the brows.

  8. Exhale deeply as you move your eyes sideways, and inhale as the eyes return to the starting position.

  9. Repeat 10 times to start with, and increase the count to 25 with each practice.

  10. Close the eyes and allow to rest for 10 seconds after every repetition.

4. Clockwise & Anti-Clockwise Eye Rotations:

  1. Sit in the Padmasana or Sukhasana position.

  2. Maintain the head and spine in an erect position and rest the hands on your knees in the yoga mudra.

  3. Allow the left palm to rest on the left knee, and lift the right fist above the right knee. Keep the thumb facing the ceiling. Focus on the thumb while keeping the head and elbow straight.

  4. Breathe in as you take the thumb upwards and exhale as you complete the circle.

  5. Repeat this process 5 times very slowly, and repeat the procedure in an anticlockwise motion for 5 repetitions.

  6. Keep the right palm on the right knee, while keeping the eyes closed, and relax.

General Tips for Eye Care

  1. Avoid continuous staring for a prolonged period of time. Periodically blink and look away at regular intervals to prevent eye strain.

  2. Avoid staring at the TV screen close-up as this is one of the main causes of myopia. Also avoid excessive staring at computer, mobile and video game screens, which strains the entire body.

  3. Correct lighting is a another important aspect for eye health. Ensure that you read in proper lighting, not dim or very bright sunlight. Reflecting objects like water, such as nearby a pool, beach, lake can also cause eye strain as light bounces off them.

  4. A lack of sufficient sleep is another enemy of good eye health. If you tend to stay up very late at night, try going to bed earlier by just 15 minutes. Try to gradually bring your bedtime in accordance with the Ayurvedic routine, before 10 p.m.
