Shhh…if you can hear your bones creak, you are probably at risk of osteoporosis. This silent killer is caused due to low bone mineral density (BMD) which can result in pain, poor posture and even fractures.

A visual report on Newsflicks showed some shocking statistics. About 8.9 million fractures are caused by osteoporosis on a yearly basis. Also, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over 50 suffer from this brittle bone problem. In India, around 50 million people suffer from this bone disorder.

Ayurveda and Osteoporosis

Ayurveda considers the loss of bone density to be attributed to the Air humor or Vata dosha. The worsening of this condition can also affect other organs of the body causing issues such as osteoporosis, breathing difficulty, anxiety, constipation, forgetfulness, degenerative arthritis, lower back pain, gradual loss of height, stooped posture, insomnia, frequent urination and dental problems.

The Fire humor of Pitta dosha is responsible for your digestion/metabolism. If this humor is imbalanced, poor digestion or weak metabolism could prevent bones from receiving the nutrients they need for strength and repair. For example, low stomach acid (betaine hydrochloride) negatively impacts the absorption of calcium and other nutrients.

Best Treatment for Osteoporosis

Here are some herbal remedies for low bone density that are popularly used in Ayurveda. Please ensure that you consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before taking any of these Ayurvedic medicines for low bone density.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha (Indian ginseng) is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which makes it the popular choice to combat arthritis (osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis). This herb is loaded with different minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, potassium and magnesium. If you have chronic backache, weak muscle strength and general fatigue, then add ¼ tsp of ashwagandha powder to a cup of water or warm milk twice daily during the late morning and afternoon.

Praval Pishti

Praval Pishti (Coral calcium) is one of nature’s best sources of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). It also contains magnesium, Vitamin C and trace minerals. Because its chemical composition is very similar to human bones, coral calcium is commonly used as a bone tonic.

Moti Pishti (Mukta Pishti)

Moti Pishti (Pearl calcium) is another of Mother Nature’s remedies for osteoporosis derived from pure pearls. A powerhouse of highly absorbable calcium, its healing properties include being anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antacid, adaptogenic, antioxidant, anti-stress, antidepressant, etc.

Shatavari and Sesame Seeds

Both of these when used together make a powerful calcium-rich combo for your bones as they banish Vata imbalances. Chewing a handful of sesame seeds every morning to get approximately 1200mg of natural calcium. This is a great option for those who can’t take dairy products.

If you want to know how to increase bone strength naturally, make a bone building pick-me-up with one part black or white sesame seeds, half part shatavari, with ginger and raw sugar or jaggery added to taste. Consume an ounce daily to get a good dose of bio available calcium.
