Your skin is your body’s largest organ; it protects you from the harsh environmental elements of sun, water, dust and chemicals. Every now and then, the ugly acne monster rears its head and your skin breaks out into angry red pimples. At this stage, most of us turn to expensive cosmetics laden with harsh chemicals that do nothing but aggravate your skin even more.

Acne is caused when the pores become clogged with excess oil or sebum, produced by the body’s hormones. The best course of action is to avoid using any harsh chemicals and alleviate the issues with natural acne remedies. Using natural home remedies for acne is much more safer, cost effective and easier than going the cosmetic route.

So, the next time you get plagued by horrendous acne, try out these five best home remedies for acne:

Cinnamon and honey mask: Honey and cinnamon make a killer combination when it comes to natural acne treatments. Cinnamon has antimicrobial properties that prevent bacteria from growing, and honey is a natural antibiotic which eradicates the bacteria present.

Take two tablespoons of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon and blend them together until they form a paste. Apply the mask to the face or spot treat, leaving it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off completely and pat the face dry.

Tulsi paste: Tulsi (holy basil) paste is an excellent Ayurvedic treatment for acne and pimples. If you don’t have fresh basil on hand, dried basil leaves will do the trick.

Steep 2-3 teaspoons in warm water and form a paste. Leave on the face for about 10 minutes and use 4-5 times a week. It’s also one of the best natural remedies for acne when used as a toner with the next ingredient on our list.

Apple Cider Vinegar: This kills off the bacteria that is the root cause of pimples. It also balances the pH level of the skin, which makes it difficult for bacteria to live. With its astringent properties, apple cider vinegar helps to mop up excess oil. Because of this , do not overuse this remedy as it can dry out the skin which in turn will compensate by overproducing oil, thus triggering an outbreak.

Take pure, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and fresh water; with a ratio of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water, dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply onto the blemishes. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse. Re-apply this several times a day and thoroughly wash the face after each application.

Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil is one of the strongest home remedies for acne overnight. While using oil to battle oil production might seem counterintuitive, tea tree oil is not like the type of oil produced by the skin. It works like a solvent that cuts through the excess dead skin cells and sebum and also unblocks pores. It contains antibacterial properties that kills acne-causing bacteria and prevents further outbreaks.

Dilute some tea tree oil with one part oil to nine parts water. Dip a cotton swab in the mixture and apply to problem areas. Always dilute tea tree oil and never use it neat or ingest it.

Lemon juice: Lemon juice is undoubtedly one of the best remedies for acne that is easily available, right in your own fridge. It is rich in vitamin C, which is beneficial for skin; citric acid helps to exfoliate the skin properly. The astringent properties of lemon dries out the blemish.

Take one tablespoon of lemon juice and yogurt, dab with a cotton swab or Q-tip, and apply to the blemish. Allow to sit for 15 minutes until dry, and wash it off. However, be careful to wipe it off thoroughly before stepping out in the sun as lemon juice is photosensitive and it can cause a reaction.
